The Lotus Position
Padmasana, or The Lotus Position is a Yoga pose where you sit in a cross-legged position, in which your feet are placed on the opposite thighs. Today, I want to tell you all about this position, which many people find complicated, but in reality it is one of the easiest Yoga positions out there.
Origin:
It is unknown how long ago the Lotus position was created, however a God of Hinduism, Shiva, the founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha and the Teaching Gods of Jainism, Tirthankaras, have all been portrayed in this position, which can lead us to believe that this position may have been introduced in 563BCE.
The Meaning Behind Its Name:
The position is known to represent a lotus, thus the name. It is meant to encourage proper breathing through meditative practice and physical stability.
